Field Season

It’s summer, and you’re on your own in the backcountry. It is as beautiful as it is remote, and while you’re grateful that you stumbled across this listing on the ecology job board, you can’t help wishing for a nice, simple list of GPS coordinates.

Who knows why Dr. Olson decided to note down site locations using cryptic landmark descriptions instead of the standard LAT-LON? They must have had their reasons. Whatever those are, the end result is you - the seasonal worker - hitting the trails to hunt down and retrieve their equipment. 

This position has the independence and challenge you love about this kind of work. It will be the first time you’ve ever worked a job like this solo, but you’re ready.

Welcome to Field Season, a solo journaling game where you take on the role of a seasonal field technician working for an ecology lab. Your predecessor, a postdoctoral researcher named Dr. Olson, arrived at your field site the previous summer and deployed six trail cameras. The exact locations of those cameras have unfortunately been lost, but they still contain valuable data, and your boss wants them back.

Your job is to venture out into the field – alone – to find and retrieve this equipment. During your journey, you will explore wild places, make discoveries, and contend with a variety of obstacles. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to find those cameras.

To play, you will need:

•  A standard deck of cards, jokers removed
• Two six-sided dice (2d6)
• A notebook or some other journaling tool
• Index cards or random slips of paper
• A token of some sort (coin, twig, stone, etc.)
• A flat surface to build your map
